This morning, my brother, grandma, and I embarked on our trip of a lifetime. We woke up at 6 AM, had breakfast, packed the last things, took pictures, said good bye, and finally got on the road by 7:20. Our first stop was five minutes later (I know, haha) to get gas. We took 40/60 to 70, going all the way to Kansas City and enjoying views of farm fields. In KC, we saw Worlds of Fun, the amusement park with a very-scary-looking roller coaster with 200-foot drops. Ahh! Then we got on 29 and drove to a rest stop about midway between KC and St. Joseph. We enjoyed a lunch of Canadian Bacon-and-cheese-filled pita pockets, Pringles, blueberries, and pudding. It was fairly windy and we were laughing as Matthew's plate, bottle, and napkin flew in all different directions. We also laughed when Grandma reached for the Pringles can and it fell over, dumping Pringles all over Matthew and me!
After lunch, we were back on 29. Around 1:25 PM, we said good-bye to Missouri and hello to Iowa, realizing we wouldn't see our good old home state for 53 days. We saw dozens of fields full of corn and soybeans, and amazingly, they were nice and green, unlike Missouri's drought! We got gas in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at 2:15, and then went on directly to Chamberlain, going through Souix Falls and other small, cute little towns. We saw signs for the Ice Cream Capitol of the World (Lemars, Iowa) and the Corn Palace (Mitchell, South Dakota). I got really excited when I saw a sign for the Laura Ingalls Wilder site in De Smet, South Dakota, since I am the biggest Little House fan there is! My mom and I will be doing a Little House trip after a high school study, so I guess we'll be touring that part of the country again!
We arrived in Chamberlain around 7:15, checked in, drug our bags up, enjoyed chicken-bean-cheese tortillas, had a nice swim in the pool, and came back to take showers. Now we're ready to enjoy a good night's rest. Tomorrow, please check back for adventures at Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Wall Drug...as we embark on our Alaska trip!
